As adults, we like to fall asleep in a cozy, warm bed. So why should babies be any different?
That’s why having the perfect sleeping environment makes all the difference. We’ll look at the Fisher Price Soothing Motions Bassinet and see how close it comes to being the perfect “bed” for our babies.
Setting the tone for bed is crucial for our little ones. Having a stable and consistent sleeping pattern will set the precedence for future sleeping habits.
I have personally purchased and used this bassinet so I have firsthand experience. I’ll go through the ins and outs and what I liked and didn’t like about this bassinet.
So stick around for the details.
Are the Lights Worth the Hype?
I must say that the ceiling light show is actually amazing!
The bassinet has a main light (orange) on the control system which can act like a nightlight. I like the nightlight idea but I think it’s too close to where the baby’s face is. It’s actually attached to the inside of the bassinet, so if the baby wakes up in the middle of the night (which, let’s face it, is inevitable), then the light is smack in their face. The light is not bright but it could still startle a waking baby.
The lights in the ceiling though, are a whole different ballgame! The theme is the night sky with the moon and stars. There are different light settings which can change the pattern in the ceiling.
I must say it’s quite mesmerizing! I found myself constantly changing the control because it was so soothing for me.
My son though, was so intrigued by the lights that he would often just stare at it instead of falling asleep. I kid you not, I thought the lights were supposed to make babies drift off, but it did the opposite for my little one.
But overall, I would say the light show is definitely worth the hype and would make any baby happy to be in bed 🙂
Lullaby Sensations and Sound Selection
I liked that I could choose between different common lullabies for my baby to fall asleep. He especially loved when I sang it along with the music, and fell asleep much quicker this way.
You can also control the volume quite easily. I usually turned the volume down once my son fell asleep.
The background sounds coupled with the overhead projection light show made for a very fun way to fall asleep, whole still maintaining the calmness.
Sleeping in a Swing?
This might sound like an awesome idea, but I feel a bit different now that I’ve seen it in motion.
So for those who aren’t aware of this feature, the bassinet is basically hanging like a swing/hammock so it moves back and forth with movement. This is a fun idea but I don’t think this is the best idea when the baby finally falls asleep.
Early on, I never had an issue with the motion because my son wouldn’t move about as much during sleep. But once he started to wriggle more in the bassinet, I found that he would wake up because of the movement of the bassinet. He would get startled very easily so this wasn’t the greatest thing for him.
When I say wriggle more I don’t mean like at 4 or 5 months. He was moving about very early on (within the first month and a half) and so he didn’t end up sleeping in the bassinet for very long.
The mattress is thinner than many other bassinets on the market so I didn’t like this feature. I would have preferred it to be a bit thicker.
I was really bummed out about this as I had spent a good deal of money to buy a bassinet with all the fancy features, that I thought would work for any baby. But this was not the case for us.
I have read where other moms were very satisfied and didn’t have this problem with the motion. But again, every baby is different.
So for us, the motion component was not a big hit unfortunately.
The mattress cover is machine washable and it didn’t fade with each wash which was quite awesome. The vibrant colors and design pattern will light up any room.
It can actually work with many nursery themes because the white color is pretty neutral. My nursery color was white so it fit right in.
Does the Storage Make Sense?
To be honest, the storage is just a base at the bottom of the bassinet. There are no sides to prevent things from falling over so this is a huge downside.
I had to make some adjustments to make it work how I wanted. I just used a basket that would fit underneath and added items as I needed them. So I would stock up on pampers and rags etc. I would also keep a wipes container underneath.
The space is quite big compared to most, but it’s just not enclosed.
Your Baby Feels Right at Home
Overall, I would recommend this bassinet because the features are amazing and your baby will have fun with the lights show.
If you’re thinking about getting a bassinet that can do multiple things and have multiple features, then I think this is a very good option.
Bring joy to your baby’s life while giving them a great place to rest their head.
The Fisher Price Soothing Motions Bassinet is definitely a front runner in this category and Fisher Price has established a great reputation by providing safe and fun baby items, that can be passed down through the generations.
