Glider and Ottoman

Glider and Ottoman Sets – Do You Really Need This?

Why would I buy a glider and ottoman when I can just use my couch? Have you asked yourself this question?

I sure did! And I went back and forth in my head trying to decide if buying “not so cheap” glider and ottoman sets would be beneficial to me and my baby. Now, you can also buy this second hand which can save you a lot of money.

I will touch on a few of the common reasons why some moms ultimately give in and purchase these items, and why I decided to just get it and try it out.

I only got the glider because I couldn’t find a matching ottoman for the glider I liked. But it worked very well for us!

This for me was the #1 reason for choosing the glider!

The soft, cushy material made for a relaxing feel whenever I sat down. I find that gliders like this beige one tend to be more comfy because it has more padding.

Just the ease with which I could have a peaceful moment whenever I felt overwhelmed, was enough for me.

My son loved the rocking motion as well, and most times fell right asleep as we both rocked to a catchy song or nursery rhyme.

To be honest, I felt like I could also fall asleep quite easily once I put him down.

Convenience Factor

Having the glider right there in his room was literally a life saver! Not having to walk all the way to the living room to sit and relax with him was huge, especially on those days when you don’t have the energy to be walking up and down the house.

Saving time, no matter how small, is a big deal when you have another little human to take care of. So going from crib to change table to glider all in the same space was awesome!

As I said previously, you can purchase some for very reasonable prices, $150 or lower, and I find that neutral colors like grey and beige fit very well with any nursery theme.

A couch can be very comfy, don’t get me wrong. But once you see how easy it is to have your own “personal couch”, you will wonder why you had second guessed getting one in the first place.

Multiple Uses

The primary reason I got the glider was to have those special, relaxing moments with my baby. But I have to admit, once I saw how comfy it was, I couldn’t resist bringing it into the living room.

So this can double as a chair or recliner (depending on the type you get) right in your living space. The ottoman would be the perfect addition to making movie nights that more special.

This leather pair adds a touch of elegance to any room, and can make movie night feel like you’re really at the theatre!

My TV watching adventures got a lot more comfy once I discovered my new-found use for the glider. Even my husband was reaping the benefits! We would fight over who gets to sit in it first!

Late Night Visits

When your little one is finally in their own room at night, you will be thankful that you have a glider and ottoman right there in the nursery.

Why go back to your bedroom with the baby, only to wake up your spouse or partner with a crying baby? I mean, it would great if they helped out at night, but chances are, you’re going to be by yourself a lot of the times.

This works great if your baby is very curious and loves to look at everything in sight! (P.S. this is most babies). By staying in the room, this will help your baby to fall back asleep much quicker because of the limited movements.

Being able to pick your baby up and put them back to sleep without leaving the room will be so rewarding! You might even end up sleeping in the glider after you put baby back to sleep.

  1. Very relaxing and comfortableottoman
  2. Convenient
  3. Make late night feedings and visit go a lot more smoothly

  1. Can be expensive – much cheaper if bought second hand
  2. Can take up space in a smaller room
  3. Not great if you get dizzy easily

So is it Worth the Buy?

Yes, Yes and Yes!

It will save you so much time moving between rooms. Plus the biggest benefit for me is the relaxation factor! I ended up using it for reasons other than why I bought it.

If you can get it used, you will save a lot of money. But there are also some affordable options on the market.

What other Pros and Cons can you think of?

Share your experience or concerns in the comments. Do you agree that it’s a great buy or not needed at all? Thanks for reading 🙂

Yes, I have a baby and love having a glider in the room. It’s a used one and it squeaks, so that gets rid of the temptation to rock him to sleep. If I had the money, I’d have gotten a new one, but the used one works good enough.

Yea my used one worked just fine for us as well. It didn’t squeak, but that’s the risk you take buying it used unfortunately. I agree that buying a new one might eliminate some minor issues. Thanks for your input 🙂

I felt the same way when I was pregnant. “Oh I don’t need this”. OMG was I wrong. We ended up getting a recliner/rocker instead of a glider from a family member who was getting rid of there’s otherwise I would have been buying up the comfiest one I could find! Great read and review!

Yes Nicole, I also thought maybe it wasn’t needed at first, but as you said, once you see how awesome and convenient it is, you won’t regret buying one. Getting one second hand (like I did as well) can save you a ton of money so that was great. Thanks for your input and personal experience.

It is true that all new mothers need an ottoman! The motion of rocking mimics the motion a baby feels while inside your womb, so its very soothing. Whether you are breast feeding or bottle feeding, having one of these in the nursery is essential to make it easier to take care of your baby. I like the options you have here, they all look very comfortable. My favorite it the very first one.

Comfort is for sure the main reason behind buying this. And you’re right Sophia, the rocking motion does help to soothe the baby so thanks for adding that.

Wish they had those around when my babies were around. i used to place them on my stomach and try bouncing on the bed gently to get them to fall asleep. They did most times but as I slid them off my stomach they would wake up again. A glider would have been the perfect solution.

I wouldn’t be so hard on the stomach – it can make for a comfy, relaxing environment for your little one 🙂 But I’ve also had my share of moving my baby, only to have him wake up the minute I move him. The glider was a life saver for me, and it also made me relaxed and ready for bed myself.

Hi and thank s for this post. very informative and interesting.

I love our slider and it really became useful when I mother had her knee operation and had to keep her leg elevated and being able to move it around without much effort made life a lot easier for her.

Thanks so much for reading Jennifer. I actually never even thought about using the glider in times where you are not as mobile. But that makes so much sense. It is certainly versatility at its finest!
