Medela Electric Breast Pump – Pump In Style

If you’re a mother who plans on pumping breast milk for your baby, you want the very best pump on the market. They can get quite pricey, but as the saying goes, you get what you pay for.

The Medela electric breast pump is the #1 recommended breast pump by hospitals, and that is one of the reasons why it is considered the most effective breast pump on the market today.

There are different variations and models and you’re sure to find your perfect within this brand. Keep in mind that accessories/parts can be changed when worn out.

Another thing to keep in mind is the size of the breast shield. The kit comes with a 24mm breast shield, but some people might need a smaller size. The 24mm is kind of the average size used by most moms.

Pumping Efficiency

efficiency

Because pumping can be so stressful on the body, you want a machine that will get you the most milk in the shortest amount of time.

Everyone’s body is different and each mom will produce varying levels of breast milk throughout their breastfeeding journey. But the bottom line is this…. The more efficient the pump, the better your overall results.

The Medela double breast pump allows you to pump both breasts at once, without sacrificing your milk supply. The machine is super powerful with such a small size.

This breast pump is ideal for moms who pump a few times throughout the day. There are many moms who choose to exclusively pump, so this would be perfect for them.

Use On-the-Go

One great thing about this Medela breast pump is that you can bring it with you on the road.

The package also comes with a battery pack that uses 8 AA batteries (sold separately).

Funny thing is, I never really noticed this until months into my pumping, but boy was it a life saver!

Keep in mind though, that the batteries tend to wear out very quickly as the pump takes quite a bit of energy to get going. All in all, this is a great feature so you never have to worry about not having an outlet!

Style & Convenience

There are 2 different styles – backpack and tote, so you have a preference of which works better for your style.

I personally got the tote as it was a hand-me-down from my sister. The tote, in my opinion, is more “stylish” and is easy to disguise.

But the backpack is more convenient, in that, your hands are free to do other stuff while carrying the breast pump.

Even if you’re a business person and wear business attire to work, your breast pump bag looks just like a regular bag, so no one will know what you’re actually “hiding” underneath it all.

Storage of Milk

Each breast pump kit comes with 4 storage bottles for the milk. This is very handy if you’re out and about and need to put the pumped milk in the fridge for example. The bottles have lids to prevent contamination.

The bottles are multi functional. I also used some of the Medela bottles as regular bottles for my baby when he was much younger. All you need is a nipple and ring and you’re good to go.

I like the small size of the bottles as they can easily fit in most places.

A storage cooler bag and an ice pack are also included, in case you need to keep your breast milk cool on the road. (This is huge as you don’t want your preciously pumped milk to go bad).

Another safe thing about this brand is that any breast pump part that comes into contact with breast milk is BPA free. This is a huge concern for many parents, so this is a cool safety check point.

Double the Power

The Pump in Style breast pump is a double breast pump. Unlike the single pumps, you can pump both breasts at once.

This is a big time saver as you can half the amount of time it would take you to pump each breast separately. Of course, the double pumps are more expensive, so keep your budget in mind when deciding to purchase.

There are other Medela models on the market, and they keep getting better and better features.

Adjustable Speed

One great thing about this pump is that you can set the speed to your comfort level.

This is a 2 phase expression model, which mimics the natural flow of milk when sucked directly from the breast.

The machine starts with rapid pulsating of the breast to stimulate the milk flow. Once you start seeing your milk flow, called “let down”, you press the button to start the suctioning of the milk effectively.

Renting a Breast Pump

Did you know this?

Yes, you can actually rent breast pumps!

Check your local pharmacy for options.

In Canada, some locations include London Drugs and Shoppers Drug Mart.

I rented the Medela Symphony for almost 2 weeks while I waited for my Pump in Style to arrive. The difference in milk production was not that significant, but it definitely prepared me for future pumping sessions.

You do have to by the accessories to go with it though, as that should be single use only. You will only get the pump itself to rent.

The accessories kit is sold separately and includes everything you need to start pumping – bottles, vacuum cords, nipple funnels, etc.

Conclusion

The Pump in Style worked great for me and I was satisfied with the results.

I haven’t tried out the new model, the Sonata, but I’ve heard really great reviews about it. Plus, it has touch screen display which is a really neat feature.

So if you’re looking for a durable breast pump, Medela is your go-to brand and the Pump in Style is cost effective, yet productive.

Great post, can not recommend Medela Breast Pumps enough, I had the swing for when my babies were born and it was great. So efficient, and relatively quiet aswell. The ability to pump straight into those easy to use bags for future storage was great aswell. Thanks for sharing and I totally agree with your recommendation. You can’t go past a Medela product for feeding.

I agree having a backpack is way better. Also because its less dirty, you are less likely to place your backpack on the floor, unlike the bag per say, and the floor is where yucky germs are most likely to be. I had the backpack myself it was a great tool because I exclusevely pumped for my son for 6 months ( he had nipple confusion, I didnt’ want to give up breastfeeding him ) its a lot of work in itself, you want to make sure you are doing it right. Why not invest in a quality pump that will do he job proper! I was given a Aveda pump at a Baby Shower and (shhh) I returned it to the store, chose a Medela and paid the difference instead 🙂

I won’t say a word Sophia haha but I agree that the backpack is so much easier to handle. It’s so much easier having a backpack so you can have both hands free to hold your baby and do anything else. And it is true that you are less likely to put the backpack on the floor, because it’s safe and secure on your back 🙂
